The Freedom Tower

This is an image of the Freedom Tower that should be completed by the beginning of next year.

New York Skyline

Notice how the New York skyline has change especially after the advent of steel for the construction of skyscrapers.
This picture is from The National Archives and shows rows of frame houses in a hilly area of Pittsburgh. The background of the picture shows smoke-shrouded throughout the city. This picture was taken in the year 1940. The smoke in the back of the city can be seen as pollution from the factories and industries.
This is a picture from The National Archives of rows of laundry outside a New York City apartment house. This picture was taken during the year 1935. The posters below advertise coming attractions at the Roosevelt and Apollo Theaters. I am assuming that this is a scene from an upcoming show at the Roosevelt and Apollo Theaters.

Recalling, 1993

In 1993 New York was a different place. Some parts were a war-zone others parts for example were not as developed. This link provides eye witness accounts from that time in a particular area. This project is named Recalling, 1993 and it uses pay phones to share the experiences of 1993.

This picture shows the pay phones that are used in project.

Women in World War II

This is a picture of a women riveter during World War II.  The women is in the Boeing Plant in Seattle and there were women all over the country doing the exact same thing that this women is doing right now.  Riveting was a popular job for women during the war and just one of the many jobs that women did to help the war effort.  The women were a vital component to the U.S. war effort and one of the big reasons why the U.S. won the war.

This is San Francisco, California in 1945. This is a picture of a cable car going down a street in San Francisco. It shows the changing technology during this time period. Before cable cars people used to travel by walking or horses. Transportation has become much easier because of new technologies.

This is New York City at night in 1935 from the National Archives. I find this picture to be interesting because it shows New York city from a really high view so people can get a good description of what it really looked like back then. From this picture NYC looks similar to what it looks like today.

I found this picture of some flapper girls in the city during the 1920s. When I think of the 1920s, I automatically think of the flapper girl. I think this picture really shows what a typical flapper girl looked like. The women all have short bob hair and dresses that do not cover them up completely.  They just look like 5 friends hanging out; they do not look like mothers or daughters or wives, just normal women.  This picture reminds me of Sex and the City and how there was always a shot of the Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte walking down the street of New York City.  Flapper girls are very interesting and iconic people.

Philadelphia in 1920

This is a picture of Broad Street in Philadelphia, PA.  I just thought this was a cool picture because I have stood on this street many times and i recognize the town hall in the background.  This picture does not show how crowded the cities were during this time but you can see people walking on the sidewalk and the cars on the street.

Tenement Life 1860-1910

I found this video on youtube and thought it was really interesting because it ties into what we talked about last class which was the workers in the city in the 1900s. The guy who made it wanted to see how his immigrant ancestors from Ireland lived in New York when they arrived in the late 1800s.  He found pictures from the NYC Department of Tenement and some of the pictures were taken by Jacob Riis and I thought that was cool because we looked at some of his pictures in our last class.  The video only features pictures but I think they really show how the immigrants lived in the American city.  The end of the video features a clip from one of the first Motion Pictures by Thomas Edison.

Amusement at Coney Island

Coney island was a major attraction in the New york city. This shows one entertainment aspect that the city had to offer. This brought tourism into the city and generated revenue off of its attractions.

Coney Island is still around and this is a more modern look at it.

This picture was taken in New York City in 1877.  The picture was taken in a low-income community and the picture reflects that very well.  I thought it was really cool, it showed more of the cultural aspect.  There are men playing baseball and children standing on the outside watching.  I also like the laundry that is hanging from the buildings.

1900s American City

This is a video of urban america of film clips from 1896 to 1903.This showed clips from Ellis Island to New York City. I thought it was interesting to think about how New York City is now and see what it was like in the 1900s with trolleys and marketplaces instead of what we are used to seeing.

This next video was a little funny because it was more a a silent film with the music and the sayings. I thought it was interesting to see more around the city with the horse&buggy and the old automobiles.
